Native Hawaiian ferns in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawai‘i, in Hawaii. They begin life as a purple coil that shoots straight out from the ground. This very common fern has long, tough, wiry, highly branched stems that sprawl across the ground to form dense, tangled, impassable thickets in disturbed areas like old lava flows.
