The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the place of refuge (or puʻuhonua) in the Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, on the Island of Hawai‘i, were home to several generations of powerful chiefs. It is compsed of archeological sites including: temple platforms, royal fishponds, hōlua tracks, and some coastal village sites. Hōlua or heʻe hōlua is a 2,000-year-old traditional Hawaiian sport that involves sledding downhill on slopes like a surfer on a wave.
